There is a shelter, and a kiosk provides information about House Mountain. Some hikers make the saddle their out-and-back destination, resulting in four miles of hiking. Others choose to conquer one peak or both, the latter resulting in an all-day mountain experience. From the trailhead and closed gate, start up the unblazed House Mountain Trail. The trail passes private property on the left for the first 0.5 miles. The remaining hike to the saddle becomes steeper and more rutted.

Then, you’ll see a sign that reads “Overlook.” If you look at the map, you’ll note that this is essentially the summit of Big House Mountain. There is a designated parking area for House Mountain Reserve on Saddle Ridge Road. There is also an information kiosk with a large trail map.

First, ensure to catch the sunrise or sunset from the summit, as the view is spectacularly beautiful. Bird watching is another popular activity, thanks to the variety of species found here. If photography is your passion, there are countless nature sights at House Mountain waiting to be captured, from the lush forest canopy to the panoramic mountain vistas. On the other hand, the more challenging Crest Trail extends for 1.5 miles and may take roughly 2-3 hours round trip. If you’re a seasoned hiker seeking an adventure or wish to indulge in bird-watching or photography, this might be your preferred path.

Welcome to my journey exploring the breathtaking House Mountain State Natural Area, a hidden gem tucked away in Tennessee. As an avid hiker, I’ve traversed numerous trails, but House Mountain stands out as an exceptionally memorable experience. Nestled within lush greenery, it serves as a sanctuary for nature lovers, bird watchers, and hiking enthusiasts.
To get there, take Rutledge Pike back to I40, cross under the interstate, and keep going until Rutledge Pike turns into Magnolia Avenue. You will see Hardee’s on your left so make a left turn and then another left to come back around to the parking lot behind Hardee’s where you will find the food truck. She doesn’t have a website, but you can check the Facebook page. Tammy’s Fried Green Tomatoes is open Wed- Sat, 11 am- 9 pm. Once you are on Idumea Road, go about 0.5 miles and then turn left onto Hogskin Road. The parking area for House Mountain is about another 0.5 miles on your right.
Eventually, WBIR-TV moved to a shorter tower (1,504 ft) back on Sharp's Ridge near downtown Knoxville, built right next to its original 800-foot (240 m) tower. Ironically, WATE-TV now operates an adjacent tower on Sharp's Ridge, which is 20 feet (6.1 m) higher than WBIR-TV's. Mountain House Road offers a blink of a vision of the formation of the Earth itself, a small fraction leading to this speck of time, and me standing in it. Boulders and rocks have been shoved through surfaces of dirt as though from planet-shaking underground explosions gone massively right. Give yourself time to roll among the valleys and aromas, the fence lines, clouds and birds, and you’ll be well rewarded. During my last stretch home in Ukiah I promised myself a leisurely trip out Mountain House Road.
The saddle is now a meadow but was once a fruit orchard. Big House Mountain and Little House Mountain are located in House Mountain Reserve, a 968 acre mountain preserve in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The 500-acre park, located at 9601 Hogskin Road, also includes a picnic area, shelter and restroom.

One of the captivating aspects of the House Mountain State Natural Area is the abundant wildlife. As you traverse the hiking trails, you’re likely to encounter various animal species that make this area their home. Wildlife in House Mountain adds a layer of intrigue and wonder to every visit. Both House Mountain trails promise awe-inspiring scenery and an unforgettable journey through Tennessee’s natural beauty. Choosing between them simply depends on your hiking preference and stamina.

Turn left at the ridge line following the faint trail for 30 yards to passing a small campsite, then arriving at the first vista to the west. Continue for another 25 yards to the main panoramic view at Goat Point Overlook on Big House Mountain. It is a modern mountain-style house plan with an expansion option, allowing you to include additional rooms in the future.
Before erosion by Big Flat Creek, the gently dipping bedrock layers underlying House Mountain once extended to Clinch Mountain, which lies approximately two and a half miles to the northeast. The bedrock structure represents a large synclinal fold that formed during the Appalachian mountain building event called the Alleghenian Orogeny. Folding and faulting of the bedrock occurred approximately 250 million years ago when tectonic plate motions caused the collision between North America and Africa. Through geologic time, dissolution and erosion have separated House Mountain from its larger parent, Clinch Mountain. It is one of the best observable examples of geologic change that shaped the Ridge and Valley of East Tennessee. Thus, the basalt that was emitted preserved the sedimentary layers below it, including the Schnebly Hill Formation and the thin band of Fort Apache Limestone. The Mogollon Rim has receded at a rate of 1 foot per 600 years since and the current edge of the rim can be seen several miles away from the summit. Highway 11W (Rutledge Pike) and go north and east on Rutledge Pike. After about 10 miles, look for the “House Mountain State Park” sign on the right side of the highway and then turn left on Idumea Road. A few days later on Feb. 21, 2024, the former Speaker's husband bought 20 more call options for Palo Alto Networks.
